What Is The Collective Canvas?
The Collective Canvas is a rotating, collaborative painting experience where local artists each paint on a canvas for just a few minutes before passing it on to the next person. By the end of the session, each canvas has been shaped by multiple artists—different styles, perspectives, and energies layered together into a single, one-of-a-kind artwork. No one knows what the final piece will look like, and that’s the magic.
How It Works
We meet on Sundays from 1:00-2:30 at the studios in Suffield, CT. All experience levels are welcome. Some people bring their own acrylic paints and participate for free. Some people prefer to travel light and use the studios paints & brushes, in which case they pay a $20 material fee. We sit around a giant table, laugh, talk, have a tea, connect & create. Artists rotate through multiple canvases, each artist paints for a short time, typically 5-7 minutes, then passes the canvas on to the next person. There is a loosely suggested theme each session. No planning, no pressure—just intuition and flow. Everyone contributes to multiple works. We end the session with a very unique collection of finished collaborative paintings, which are then on placed on display in the gallery.
Why It Matters
The Collective Canvas is about more than painting. It’s about learning to let go of control, trusting the creative process, collaborating instead of competing, connecting with your local art community, experiencing art as therapy, play, and conversation. This workshop invites artists to step outside perfectionism and into presence. To release attachment to outcome. To create for the sake of creating—together.
The Art Lives On
After each session, the completed collaborative paintings are curated and made available for gallery viewing & purchase. Each piece is priced intentionally at only $20 to keep the art accessible and aligned with the spirit of the project—community, generosity, and shared ownership. The gallery is open for viewing/purchase on Sundays from 1:00-3:00. You can also view/purchase anytime online here. When purchasing online, local pickup is available during the checkout process, or you can choose shipping offered for a small fee. The Collective Canvas is an ongoing series and a growing movement—one that celebrates shared creativity and strengthens community through art. It is proudly spearheaded by 880 Burbank Studios and owner Lynelle Kuzontkoski, with the intention of making art more inclusive, more connected, and more human. Everyone has a mark to make. Everyone belongs on the canvas- Come paint, connect, and get creative with us!
